Description | First impressions matter, and how students feel about the class and themselves during the first two weeks of class can have a major impact their success in the course. Learn about how you can apply Laura I. Rendon's Validation Theory, "an enabling, confirming, and supportive process initiated by in- and out-of-class agents that foster academic and interpersonal development." This workshop will be interactive and include concrete examples faculty can apply in their classes immediately. The tools provided will benefit all students and faculty regardless of the level of the course and will be especially relevant to equity students. As new students will be starting their freshman year taking classes that in the past they wouldn't have met the prerequisites for, it is especially important that all faculty know strategies that will make their classes a validating part of the students' first year experience. This session is inspired by information learned at the NISOD Conference.
