Description | Theme: Guided Pathways
Follow-up session for attendees of the Spring 2018 Inspired Teaching Conference as well as faculty new to the textmapping process. Instructors will examine
chapters from textbooks and discuss text complexity and reading assignments from a student-centered perspective. Using the textmapping process, this session will examine ways to support students with the demands of discipline specific college reading, explore how students process reading assignments, and discuss how additional support can enable students to develop as independent readers and learners. Texts will be provided from a variety of disciplines, but instructors are encouraged to bring single-sided copies of textbook chapters or articles to examine.
Outcomes:
- Faculty members will be able to textmap a college level text in order to demonstrate awareness of textbook complexity within their own disciplines.
- Faculty members will be able to integrate contextualized reading strategies into their courses in order to scaffold college readers into discipline specific reading.
